“Most goals people set are not achieved because they are not held accountable for them. When goals are made in private, they tend to fall off because people stop being motivated, stop focusing and stop prioritizing.”
—Bola Onada Sokunbi, Goal Setting to Live Your Dreams
There is much to be said about ensuring that you are held accountable while pursuing your purpose. Choosing several individuals who will continuously keep you sharp mentally, spiritually, and professionally will support and safeguard your success. It is practically a non-negotiable aspect of leaping. Let’s be honest…who doesn’t need a little help now and then?
Of course, there is a degree of vulnerability that comes with accountability, because it means that you are willing to reveal and stay true to your most authentic self. As you take your quantum leap toward your next level, having a faithful few to ground you will prove to be a vital part of your process. To be perfectly frank, there is no limit to the number of accountability checks and balances that you can have in place. Each one will help you move further along in your process.
However, there are two specific areas of answerability that I suggest you pay special attention to when leaping.
Moral accountability will rest on the shoulders of those who know and understand you at your core. Chances are, these individuals were present during your hatching process. They understand the trials and tribulations of your journey to this point.
As you leap into a new level, unscrupulous individuals may offer you shortcuts to success by any means possible. When you are deeply involved in working toward something so important, you may be wearing rose-colored glasses that make you an easy target. It is essential to have friends, colleagues, coaches, or mentors who can act as your voice of reason. They will help to ensure that you do not lose your way, no matter how tempting some of the more unsavory offers that come your way may seem.
Vision accountability is all about having an anchor for the vision that you plan to make into a reality. As you leap into a world of new possibilities, it can be easy to veer off the path of your original vision. It does not take much to wander off the mark.
I remember that, shortly after launching the Motivated Mom initiative, there were a few other opportunities that came my way. Several other entrepreneurs who did not know my true focus suggested that I follow the crowd and take advantage of these popular options. I thought heavily about it and decided not to follow through on their ideas. While these opportunities might have been profitable, they did not fit the path that I had envisioned for the Motivated Mom. I had a desire to serve the everyday working mom, and in some instances, the underserved. It took a friend to counsel me on ways to make the platform profitable, but it certainly did not mean altering my initial vision.
Keep this lesson in mind when weighing the opportunities that come your way.
